Before Starting the Building Work Soil Test is Very Important One

SOIL– Safe Bearing Capacity of Soil

a)     Plate Load Test (PLT)IS 1888 – 1982 – The Modulus of subgrade reaction ( K) 12kg/cm = Mean Bearing Pressure (P) 1.5kg/cm2 / Mean Settlement (0.125cm) not less than 0.025
b)    Standard Penetration Test (SPT) - IS 2131 – 1981 - BS EN ISO 22476-3, ASTM D1586 and Australian Standards AS 1289.6.3.1. The number of blows required for 150mm - 450 mm penetration into the ground is the standard penetration number N
c)     Cone Penetration Test (CPT) - IS 4968 (P3) – 1987N = 10 qc kpa (qc – resistance)
d)     NBC – 1983 – SBC – Rock – 440-3240 kpa, Gravel, Soft Shale, Course Sand & Stiff Clay – 440 kpa, Loose gravel, Medium sand & Clay– 245 kpa, Black cotton soil – 130-160 kpa, Fine sand, silt, Moist clay – 100-150 kpa, Very soft clay – 50 kpa
e)     IS: 1498 – 1970 – Classification and identification of soil - Coarse-grained soil ( Gravel & Sand) – larger than 75 micron and smaller than 4.75mm  IS sieve size, Fine-grained soil – Silts & Clays ( low compressibility – liquid limit (L) is less than 35, Medium compressibilityLiquid limit ( I ) is greater than 35 & less than 50 & High compressibilityliquid limit (H) –more than 50)  smaller than 75 micron IS sieve size.
f)     IS: 1893 - 2002 -  Criteria for earthquake resistant design of structures
g)    IS: 4326 – 1993Earthquake Resistant Design and Construction of Buildings

h)     IS: 13920 – 1993Ductile Detailing of RC Structures subjected to Seismic Forces
